Volvo Cars takes a big step forward into the electric future with a range of new mild hybrid engines.

Volvo Cars has taken an important step towards electrification goals by introducing renewed and newly developed electric motor options that will be available for the entire model range. The company has already developed the existing T8 and T6 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid engines, confirming the promise of an electric motor option in every model it produces. Volvo Cars will also launch a range of mild hybrid options in the coming months, starting with the diesel and gasoline versions of the XC90 and XC60 SUV models.

For the first time, these mild hybrid engines offer Volvo's advanced kinetic energy recovery system. This structure is represented by the new 'B' mark and forms an integrated electric engine system with existing internal combustion engines. This new electric motor delivers fuel savings of up to 15 percent and low emissions. The new brake-by-wire braking system interacts with the energy recovery system, kinetic energy is recovered during braking, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

In line with the strategy and the extremely strong demand, Volvo Cars has increased its production capacity, so that up to 25 percent of total production will be Twin Engine plug-in hybrid cars. In addition, the gradual introduction of the new “B” marked engines is expected to bring the company closer to the goal of having all its cars electric in the middle of the next decade. There will be new and improved engines introduced on Volvo's larger Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) based cars.

The T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid engine features a new battery and brake-by-wire advanced battery charging. The range of T8 engines has increased by around 15 percent and is available in all 90 and 60 Series cars. The XC90 will be available with the B5 diesel mild hybrid engine option, while the XC60 will be offered with a mild hybrid engine B4 diesel. The company's smaller Compact Modular Architecture-based XC40 SUV also includes new electric motor options. This option will be the T5 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid.
